The Person Behind the Work

I have always believed that the best way to learn about life is to be fully immersed in it. My path has not been one of sitting in a quiet library; it has been a journey of long days and late nights, balancing the responsibilities of a professional career with a deep-seated drive to know more. I have spent my life with one foot in the workplace and one in the classroom because I believe that expertise is most valuable when it is tempered by real-world experience.

Service Through Skill

While my credentials as an attorney, CPA, and CFE represent years of study at Notre Dame, St. John’s, University of Denver, and Boston University, they are really just the tools I use to help others. Whether I am analyzing a complex financial puzzle, writing practitioner articles, or crafting creative books, I am looking for the truth that helps a person or a business move forward. I do not see these as separate hats I wear, but as a single commitment to being a steady, reliable resource for those who need clarity.

The Practitioner in the Fire

Beyond the classroom and the manuscript lies a thirty-seven-year career forged in the epicenter of the most significant financial crises of our time. From investigating junk bond fraud to my involvement on the defense side of the Savings and Loan crisis, I provide a rare fusion of law, forensic accounting, finance, strategy, and human chemistry. My work is focused on protecting the mission and safeguarding the growth of the organizations I serve. I provide more details in my expert witness profile.

Rooted in Community

I find my balance in the simple, honest moments of community life. There is a specific kind of joy in the dugout of a Little League game or on the sidelines of a basketball court. Coaching has taught me that whether you are a young athlete or a seasoned professional, we all need someone in our corner who believes in us. I strive to be that person—a neighbor, a coach, and a mentor who shows up, does the work, and looks for the good in every person.

Faith, Resiliency, and the Will to Prevail...

The Quiet War: A Journey Through the Impossible

In August 2004, the trajectory of my life shifted in an instant with a diagnosis of Stage 4B follicular lymphoma. I was presented with a grim prognosis: thirty-six tumor sites, five hundred million cancer cells, and a medical estimate that I would not see the coming Christmas. What followed was a multi-year odyssey through the most aggressive frontiers of medicine—eight months of intense chemotherapy that reduced my white blood cell counts to zero, followed by a recurrence that necessitated an autologous stem cell transplant and twenty grueling rounds of total body radiation and chemotherapy regimen whose potency exceeded the previous regimen by four fold. To this day, there is no cure. It has been 16 years since my last treatment after I was expected to receive two more tolerable years.

I have walked through the valley where the physical body reaches its absolute limit, dropping to a frail one hundred and ten pounds and facing the collapse of vital organs. I navigated the disorientation of high-dosage treatment and the profound isolation of a compromised immune system. Yet, through every hallucination, every surgery, and every moment of physical brokenness, I discovered a fundamental truth: we are never truly alone. God’s presence was the steady hand that guided me through the darkest nights and the strength that allowed me to keep showing up for my son, even when I had to wear a mask just to hold him.

The Triumph of Science and Spirit

The "Stand Up To Cancer" movement is not merely a slogan to me; it is a lived reality. Since my diagnosis over twenty-two years ago, I have witnessed a revolution in oncology. The

brutal, systemic levels of radiation and chemotherapy I endured have given way to sophisticated immunotherapies and targeted treatments that preserve the dignity and health of the patient. We have made tremendous strides in turning a terminal sentence into a manageable, and often curable, condition. Since May 2010, I have remained free of cancer treatment. Despite the recent challenges of major spinal and neck surgeries, my resolve remains unshaken. I have been saved from the brink of death more times than I can count—not for my own sake, but to fulfill a mission. God's Grace is truly amazing.

The Mission: Turning Pain into Purpose

My survival is a gift I have tried to use in the service of others. The trials I faced—both the clinical battle against lymphoma and the personal weight of systemic alienation—have sharpened my empathy and my dedication to my students and clients. I believe that no matter the "bad cells" we encounter—be they biological, organizational, or personal—they can be identified, confronted, and removed.I am here to help others navigate their own "high-stakes" crises with the same grit and faith that saw me through mine. We live in a world of constant change and unexpected storms, but with a mindset of peace, and an unwavering faith, we can prevail. God has been with me through the fire, and He is there with you. We do not just survive; we thrive, we lead, and we give back.

A Lifelong Commitment to Mentorship

My time as a professor taught me that supporting someone’s growth does not end when the semester does. I am honored to have received teaching awards for my work in the classroom, but my true commitment to my students and staff has no time barrier. I am here to help, whether that means navigating a career move or finding a life breakthrough. Having walked through many seasons of life myself, I seek to understand where others are coming from. I know the grit it takes to build a dream, and I aim to be a bridge for those doing the same.

"I feel like you've lived quite the life and should consider potentially writing a book or something on social media to where you share your life story and give people wisdom on how to overcome the things you have, that many people have been through as well. Give people advice on how to move past the terrible things and think positively.

Just a thought, but I felt a tug in my heart when I prayed for you, and it was that you should share your story with a wider audience to let others know that they aren't alone in their battles. I also got the thought that you were put on earth to potentially be a teacher, not necessarily in the classroom, but in life (which you do teach life lessons and drop knowledge on more than school stuff), but I feel like your purpose might have been to go through a whole bunch of crap because you can take it, and show others what to be like in times of adversity and how to fight.

You're inspiring me and many people might not see the stuff you go through and genuinely be like, damn it's deeper than just surface level, I know it's difficult to deal with. Keep pushing man you're doing great things in this world and gods proud for sure!!_ -Milan, 2024

"It has been a long time, about 8 years, since I have seen or conversed with you... hope that you are doing well.  I am not sure that you would remember me. I wanted to, however, thank you for the education and inspiration you imparted to me during my time in your classes. I was not particularly motivated at that time to achieve at my highest potential, and I apologize for that as you and many other of my professors deserved more from me. I thank you for your opinions on life as well as the interest you took in me personally as I believe that had an effect on me graduating and ultimately being a productive member of society. A little about me 5 years later; I work in Nashville TN for a rapidly growing distribution company as estimating/pricing manager for our branches in Knoxville and Nashville. My wife and I were married in June of 2020.  My wife is an elementary music teacher in Nashville Metro schools and she is just the sweetest and caring person I’ve ever known. I say all this to thank you for having an impact on my life. I do not believe that I would be here had it not been for yourself. I would be very excited to catch up over a phone call sometime if you are available. If not, then I wish you all the best in your life. -Logan

"Hey Dr Lakatos!!! I hope all is well. Just wanted to give you an update. I put my resignation in Monday with my company that I have been with going on 11 years. I took an Executive Director Role (Operations Controller) reporting to the CFO of a PE backed company looking to go public in 2-3 years. It's a big leap for me professionally but always recall some of your advice to go for the bigger positions out there and that's what I did and some how got the job!!!! Thanks for pushing me to get out of my comfort zone. You definitely made a lasting impact on my mindset for sure." -Jason

"You may not remember me, but I have never forgotten you. You prepared me for this working world and how to fight for what I want against the odds. I’ve worked my way into Citigroup’s Capital Markets team on the CMBS side, but it wasn’t an easy trek. I started my career into real estate by being turned down by all major firms. I ended up taking an admin assistant position to a small real estate group and bide my time. Quickly thereafter I became his sole analyst and was later recruited to Countrywide’s Capital Markets group. Unfortunately, that was in 2007. I was laid off in 2008 due to the financial crisis. Never the one to quit, I worked odd and ends jobs, but stayed relevant in the field by working for 4 various due diligence groups assisting in the FDIC bank closures. Long story short, I apparently impressed my current boss when we worked together at Countrywide. He asked me to open the Dallas office. I tell you this because you have been single handedly the most influential teacher I’ve had in my life. Early on in my career when I interned in college and my first job after graduating in 2004, managers would ask me my goals. These were no different than I told you and where I wanted to be in life. Each one laughed at me as if it were an unobtainable dream and I was filled with exuberant ignorance. You never once laughed and continuously supported my ideas.

Reflecting on my life and how fortunate I am to be in my position after the work I've put in, I thought about the big influencers in my life. Thinking of you, I recently googled your name. I don't write to you to talk about your health condition, but more to let you know how much you mean to me. It was unfortunate for myself that I only had the privilege to have two classes with you, but it was great to read how many lives you've influenced in North Carolina. I regret that I didn't try to do more to stay in touch, but I was not going to regret never telling you what you've meant to my life. It's been 10 years since you've taught me, but I remember your lessons well. You are an amazing teacher and a rare gift to this world. I thank you for everything you've done for me and other students to know if you want it bad enough, nothing can stop you, but you." -Darrell
